The Odyssey traveled to the black hole, its engines straining against the gravity. Captain Elena Vasquez stood on the bridge, her eyes on the viewscreen.

"Command, this is Vasquez. We're approaching the black hole."

"Copy, Odyssey. Proceed with caution."

Kaelen appeared beside her. "The weapon is inside the event horizon. We'll need to send a probe."

The probe launched, disappearing into the darkness. The crew waited, the tension thick.

"The probe has found it," the Builder said. "A gate, just as the library described."

"Can we activate it remotely?"

"Yes. But it will take time."

The Builder interfaced with the probe, sending the activation signal. The gate flickered, then flared to life.

"The Void is sealed," Kaelen said. "For now."

"Command, the threat is neutralized."

"Copy, Odyssey. Good work. Come home."

Elena looked at the black hole, at the gate it held.

The universe was safe.

But she knew there would be other threats.

And she would be ready.

The end.

The war ended on a Tuesday.

Tommy heard the news in a German village, the words spreading through the company like fire: Germany surrendered. It was over.

Men cheered. Men cried. Men sat alone and stared at nothing. Tommy did none of those things. He just stood in the street, his rifle slung, feeling nothing at all.

Miller found him an hour later, two bottles of captured schnapps in his hands. "Walker. Drink with me."

They sat on a wall, watching the sun set over a country that had finally stopped fighting. Around them, soldiers celebrated. Around them, German civilians emerged from their houses, uncertain, afraid, free.

"I never thought I'd see this day," Miller said quietly. "Not really. Not after all of it."

Tommy nodded. He thought about Africa. Sicily. Italy. The mountains, the rivers, the beaches. The friends who weren't here. The German soldiers he'd killed. The camp they'd found.

"We should be happy," he said. "But I'm not. I don't know how to be."

Miller was quiet for a long moment. "Maybe that's alright. Maybe that's what it means to survive. You carry it with you. All of it."

Tommy pulled out Friedrich's photograph. The girl with dark hair. He'd carried it for two years. A promise he'd made to a German soldier who was probably in a prisoner of war camp somewhere.

"I'm going to find him," Tommy said. "Friedrich. The one I captured. I'm going to give this back."

Miller looked at the photograph. "You think you can find one German soldier in a million prisoners?"

"I have to try."

Miller nodded slowly. "Then I'll help you."

They sat together, the sergeant and the private, watching the war end.

Somewhere in a camp, Friedrich waited.

Somewhere in Hamburg, his sister waited.

And somewhere in between, Tommy Walker carried a photograph and a promise.
